Daily Hunt — The recovery has a leader. It still needs company.
September 7, 2026 · Retrospective holiday research sample. Matched delayed prices through 1 p.m. ET; underlying report information cutoff 2:10 p.m. ET. SPX cash references are Friday's. Regional coverage is selective; availability of every reference at that cutoff is not established. Research watches, not current alerts or standing entries.
The Two Minute Trader
Desk view: the holiday recovery is too selective to support a broad rates-relief argument. Nasdaq has recovered an opening reference while ES and gold remain below theirs. Diesel's strength is also product-specific. Carry those distinctions into the reopening; a common bullish explanation still needs evidence.
- Indices — watch whether ES joins NQ. ES needs to recover 7,715.25; NQ needs to retain 29,595.25. A fresh loss of either window low would challenge that contract's recovery case. These are related watches, with no standing entry or order through the holiday gap.
- Gold — a softer dollar has not repaired the setup. December gold remains below $4,466.50. A failed reclaim keeps the tactical recovery on hold; even a successful reclaim needs a better-defined entry and Invalid. This is not a structural bearish thesis.
- Energy — follow diesel's advantage, not a blanket energy call. Its indicative spread over crude remains above the $100.12 opening comparison; gasoline's does not. Losing that diesel advantage would weaken the thesis. Improvement in both products would broaden it, but no executable spread or refiner entry is established.
1 · What held up, what changed
No eligible forward-published trades are being graded in this edition. Friday's reconstructed scenarios remain research exercises.
The earlier question was whether the rebound could repair the opening damage. Nasdaq has made progress; ES and gold have not cleared their corresponding tests. Diesel's lead over crude has narrowed but survived. The useful carry-forward is the split between those stories, not a trade score: none of these watches supplies an eligible forward outcome.
2 · What matters today
A weaker dollar has not been enough to make this a common recovery story. Nasdaq's improvement is real within the observed window, but ES remains below its opening-range low and gold below its opening price. Treating all three as one rates-relief trade would skip the disagreement in price. The simpler stance is to keep their recovery questions separate until the evidence converges.
NQ's support is also less settled than its closing position suggests. Its final four fifteen-minute closes were at or above 29,595.25, but every bar traded below that line. Buyers recovered the reference repeatedly; the record does not yet show a clean hold. The next test is whether NQ can retain it while ES regains 7,715.25. An NQ relapse would weaken its own recovery case; ES joining would strengthen the case for a wider index recovery. Neither would, by itself, establish market-wide breadth or an executable entry.
With U.S. cash markets closed for Labor Day, that argument remains a holiday-futures watch. The evening reopening can supply another price test; confirmation from the next cash session is a separate question.
Europe complicates a simple growth-and-rates story. Euro-area second-quarter growth was revised to 0.6%; net exports contributed 0.9 percentage points while inventories detracted 0.5. Germany's July production fell 1.1%, partly reflecting auto shutdowns. Stronger headline GDP is not uniform domestic-demand strength. This does not by itself establish a euro or European-equity trade. Eurostat · Destatis
Europe finished mixed rather than uniformly weak: the STOXX 600 closed broadly flat at 649.90, while energy shares gained 1.2%. That sector strength is consistent with selective energy interest; it does not independently validate a diesel spread or a U.S. index entry. Reuters closing report

TradingView delayed fifteen-minute bars, Sunday 6 p.m.–Monday 1 p.m. ET. These are bar closes, not settlements or executable simultaneous quotes. Treasury futures prices are not cash yields. Energy and metals continued trading beyond this shared snapshot; these are not their holiday-session closing prices.
3 · Levels / gamma — the decision maps
SPX — Friday's low is the downside reference

The level: 7,706.12, Friday's cash low. Upper reference: 7,750.19, Friday's high. Above the low, Friday's range remains the reference; below it, 7,700 becomes the next modeled level to watch. No fresh cash-session confirmation is available Monday. The final fifteen-minute interval closed at 7,717.81; the separate official closing update was 7,718.60.
ES — reclaim the opening range

The level: 7,715.25, the September contract's opening fifteen-minute low. Above it, 7,723.75 is the next opening-range reference, then 7,728.50, the observed window high. Below it, recovery remains unconfirmed; 7,703.50 is the window low. A touch through a line does not establish a sustained reclaim.
NQ — recover the breakout

The level: 29,595.25, the September contract's opening fifteen-minute high. The final close was 29,603.50, back above it, but repeated intrabar dips leave support tentative. Below it, the lower opening boundary 29,534.75 and window low 29,530.50 remain downside references. The window high is 29,683.50. No broad weekly support/resistance designation is inferred from this short window.
Gamma reference — September 4, 3:59 p.m. ET model
| Market | Call / put wall | Flip / max pain |
|---|---|---|
| SPX | 7,800 / 7,700 | ~7,637.46 / 7,700 |
| ES projection | 7,805.75 / 7,705.75 | 7,643 / 7,705.75 |
| NQ projection | 29,680.50 / 29,530.25 | Unavailable / 29,430.25 |
Solid chart lines show price structure; dashed lines show modeled gamma. The SPX overlay is retrospective, not proof the model was available throughout Friday. Futures projections use stale basis and identify no contract; they are not verified current entry levels. The model remains unchanged. Positive modeled gamma is not automatically bullish; exposure units and expiry scope are unspecified. Pin estimates are unavailable, and max pain does not replace a pin or missing flip. Proximity between a wall and a price extreme does not prove dealer causation.
4 · Signals with Invalid + opportunities
Index recovery
- Status
- Watch. Tactical recovery only; no established structural bullish thesis or standing entry.
- View
- NQ has improved, but ES has not joined. Shared equity exposure does not make their price conditions interchangeable.
- Why now
- the evening reopening tests whether NQ's reclaimed reference survives and ES can repair its opening-range break.
- Expression
- separate September ES or NQ futures watches, using each contract's own map. No paired position, hedge ratio or allocation is proposed.
- Trigger
- no executable entry trigger. ES reclaiming 7,715.25 or NQ retaining 29,595.25 would improve the respective recovery case, not automatically activate a trade.
- Invalid
- a new window low would challenge that contract's recovery thesis: 7,703.50 for ES; 29,530.50 for NQ. No entry-specific Invalid was defined in advance; these references are not assigned stops.
- Countercase
- ES may remain below its reference or NQ may lose its tentative reclaim. Repeated intrabar breaks already caution against treating NQ support as settled.
- Horizon
- evening reopening and the next cash session; no order carries through the holiday gap.
- Entry constraint
- ES has 8.50 points from 7,715.25 to 7,723.75, against 11.75 back to the window low. NQ has 88.25 points from 29,595.25 to the window high, versus 64.75 back to the window low. Those distances describe location, not expected returns or a complete target/stop plan.
Gold recovery
- Status
- Watch with a tactical stand-down. No structural bearish thesis is established.
- View
- the rebound from $4,426.20 has not repaired the opening loss. Dollar weakness alone has not been sufficient confirmation.
- Why now
- the next session tests whether the recovery can regain $4,466.50 rather than remain a bounce within the observed range.
- Expression
- December gold futures, whose observed range is $4,426.20–$4,481.30. These contract prices do not transfer to a gold ETF.
- Trigger
- no standing entry. Recovering $4,466.50 improves the tactical picture but does not supply an entry rule.
- Invalid
- below the opening reference or after a failed reclaim, stand down on the recovery. A trade-specific Invalid remains undefined.
- Countercase
- a sustained recovery could improve the tactical view despite the current nonconfirmation. The evidence does not justify extrapolating today's weakness into a structural short.
- Horizon
- next-session assessment; no standing entry, target or stop.
- Entry constraint
- even a reclaim leaves $14.80 to the observed high versus $40.30 back to the window low. Entry location and a defensible Invalid remain unresolved.
Diesel versus crude
- Status
- Analytical watch. No executable spread or broad refiner entry.
- View
- product strength remains concentrated in diesel. Its indicative comparison with crude narrowed without surrendering its opening advantage.
- Why now
- diesel-minus-crude eased from $105.27 at 11 a.m. ET to $104.22/barrel, still above $100.12 at the open. Gasoline-minus-crude was $43.06 versus $43.34 at the open.
- Expression
- matched October diesel/crude is the closest analytical comparison. CRAK would express a broader refining thesis and adds global-equity exposures; BNO expresses Brent direction. Neither is a direct substitute. VanEck · USCF
- Trigger
- none. Refiner selection still needs price, valuation and business-exposure evidence; spread execution rules are absent.
- Invalid
- diesel falling below its opening comparison would undermine the relative-strength thesis whether gasoline rises or falls.
- Countercase
- both products strengthening would broaden the story; continued narrowing in diesel would weaken its distinction. A futures product comparison alone cannot establish a refiner's profitability.
- Horizon
- next-session assessment and the petroleum release.
- Measurement limit
- calculations use 42 gallons per barrel and matched bar closes. They exclude costs and refinery operations and are not a pump-price forecast.
